John the Disciple
One of the original 12 disciples of
Jesus Christ
John’s purpose in
writing his Gospel is summed up in verse 20:21:
that you may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God,
and that believing you may have LIFE in His name.”
So, John’s heart in this Gospel is for the reader to know true LIFE through Jesus Christ.
This word LIFE
is used repeatedly throughout John’s Gospel.
This word is not a reference to human life as we commonly think. The original Greek word for LIFE in this gospel is a very special
word, a one of a kind word – zoe – and means the very LIFE of God. There is no other real life apart from the LIFE of Christ; anything else on earth
that claims to offer life is actually death in disguise. In this one word – zoe – is the meaning of
life!
In often quoted John 3:16, the focus is
LIFE, not living forever in heaven.
“For
God so loved the world
that
He gave His only begotten Son,
that
whoever believes in Him should not perish
but
have the LIFE of God that is eternal.”
In John 10:10. Jesus reveals His heart
about specifically why He came:
“I
have come that they may have (My) LIFE,
and
that they may have it more abundantly (to the fullest).”
John repeatedly focuses on the LIFE of Christ.
Jesus says in John 6:35
“I
am the bread of LIFE.”
Jesus says in John 11:25
“I
am the resurrection and the LIFE.”
Jesus says in John 14:6
“I
am the way, the truth, and the LIFE.”
Jesus’ Life is the only true LIFE.
Salvation is receiving forgiveness of
sins and receiving Christ’s LIFE!!!
A person must die to his old life to
receive Christ’s LIFE – a new
identity.
This miraculous gift of LIFE is accomplished by God through the
cross of Christ.
The LIFE of Christ is most precious!
Gaze at His beauty, as John does in his
Gospel.
