TRUE FAITH

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that easily ensnares us,

and let us run with endurance

the race that is set before us, LOOKING UNTO JESUS,

the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2).

When Christians are asked about the assurance of salvation, some answers include references to works (e.g., walking the aisle, praying the sinner’s prayer, and good works outweighing bad works) and some answers include references to their belief that Jesus died for them and that they could never earn salvation.  It is clear in the first set of answers that faith is in works.  It is more subtle to see that even the second set of answers can also be faith in works.

The second set of answers can be the “right answer” but can place faith in a past belief, while still missing the only real Answer – Jesus Himself.  True faith is belief in the present indwelling Christ, and in Him alone!

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).

Faith is what you look to be your source of hope, power, and life.  You can say you have faith in Christ and yet it still can be faith in knowledge about facts about Christ, but not necessarily faith in the living Christ.  Without the living witness of Christ in you, your faith will look off unto other apparently good objects such as your past belief, your training, your abilities, your reputation, your good circumstances, another person who is your standard of Christian behavior, a tract, etc.

The fruit of the Spirit is…faith (Galatians 5:22).
